Smelling salts v. crack?

Just watched Lucic and Thornton getting pumped on smelling salts before tonight’s game.
Having read about its ingredients and possible side-effects, why haven’t pre sports’ leagues getting involved?
Anything that can raise a heart rate before physical activity can’t be a good thing.

BQ: Shawn Thornton is on pace for career numbers! (3 goals already…career best is 11.)
How is your team’s "tough guy" fairing thus far?
Rosey- Smelling salts are a combination of ammonium carbonate and perfume. They are used in some cases of faints, and other things. Some of the ingredients in smelling salts are actually potentially quite dangerous. Read up before shooting your mouth off.

Ok so I hav ea heart rate monitor the one where it comes with a watch and a little belt thing to go around your chest. Its no any kind of name brand I bought it from Fred Meyer’s it was like 30$ or something. so I don’t know how accurate it is. I am 23 5’4" and weigh 140 lbs. my bmi is 24.1 fat percentage is 36 ish. thoes are just off a website so ? well when I wore the heart rate monitor I jogged at 4.5mph on treamill for 25 min. whith a 4 min warmup walk. the treamill counter said I burned 300 calories but my heart monitor said I burned 500 cal…thats a big difference. Which one is more accurate and why ??
my husband says to just use the lower one to know for sure I’m burning enough but I just want to know what is most accurate..cause 200 cal, thats alot.
my treadmill doesn’t have an age or weight input. its older I guess I bought it from the calssifieds.
But my heart monitor does.

I have been on a health plan for about four months now. I am trying to lose weight and so far have been successfull by exercise and using weight-watchers ( I’ve lost 32lbs!). But for the last month and a half now I havent droped a pound. I want to start counting calories instead of weight watchers ( to mix things up a little). Can any one help me figure out how many calories I need and if on my non active days I need to change how many calories I consume?
Current weight : 195
Height: 5’10
Sex: F
Exercise : 55 minutes of high intensity interval cardio training
20 minutes stair stepper : 4 miles 180 calories burned
15 minutes jogging : 1.25 miles Av.speed 5.8 calories burned 200
20 minutes eliptical : 1.50 miles calories burned 145
Weight training : 45 minutes I usually burn about 300 cals doing this. I dont want to go through all of the diffrent exercies I do it takes to long.
I use a heart rate monitor to measure my heart rate and calories burned it has my weight, age and height programed into it..and a chest strap for accuracy.
When I get home Im usually clean the house a little and spend the rest of the day doing homework and taking care of kids.
I do this 5 days a week and take a break on saturday and sunday.
Can anyone help me figure out how many calories I should be consuming to lose weight and if I need to change that number on the days im sedentary?
Thanks for all your help !

Bluetooth heart rate monitor project stage 2

Using Arduono board

I use the computer for as many as 6 hours a day or more, on many days. I also love to watch movies or a good TV show. Also, I love to go shopping, and have stopped my regular exercise routine like 2 years ago (Thankfully, I am not overweight.).

I hate doing chores. Is there any way to make me get off my butt and stop putting everything off? One of my plans to get exercising again is to hook up my digital photo frame (which has photos of a cute actor on it) over by the treadmill. When I look at him, he can speed up my heart rate ‘cuz he is fun to look at!!! :)

Heart rate at 172 on treadmill but not winded?

Im 27, overweight and I can’t seem to get my heart rate up enough to be winded. I sweat A LOT. But the heart rate monitor is always reading too high and Im not losing too much weight yet.

Now that she knows what do I do? (SELF HARM)?

Sorry if that looks confusing, they do not give you enough characters for a sufficient title. Basically I am about to make a decision and I am asking for your input.
Well in one of the most surrealist moments of my life my best friend announced that she knows of my mental health short comings. She read my past yahoo questions and might very well read this one. This signifies I did not tell her willingly but rather my weak, bitchy, pathetic yahoo answer self practically cried it out to her. It’s damned pathetic, not at all the way I would choose to tell if I was forced to.
So she calls and she cries that I should get help, it is not right, I can not continue these things, it will spin out of control. I remain stoic mumbling yeah, I don’t know, and okay. She ask me if I am really listening to which I respond with bitter laughter that it is the same generic stuff everyone says, so yeah I know. During this short conversation neither of us names what my "defects" are but, we are both aware. After a short silence I say I should go, declining her invitation to talk about it.
How strange is that? She is crying and I am not. Now because I did not comfort her fears that I am in trouble she will most likely look for someone else to comfort her, spreading to them what I have worked hard to bury.
It was the worst possible way it could have happened. To think before the taboo was brought up I stupidly asked her if she thought I was sensitive, hoping she would say no. Damn it. It is like watching months of work fall away. Each falling card increasing my heart rate.
So now the question that determines what kind of person I am is put forth. Will I ignore it, embrace it, or run from it?
Ignoring it means hoping she will never mention it. I do not see this as much of an option because people are too difficult to control. Plus there is absolutely no way to get rid of the tension, we both know that she knows. This is also seen as the "suck it up" path.
Embrace it. Well she knows my secret, but could she be my confidant? I think this road looks very unappealing. I wrote out a summary of my conversation with her; she has been my best friend for eight years of my seventeen year old life and I still skirt the issue. I and heart to hearts mix about as well as oil does with water.
So run from it remains as the last path. By run I mean cut off all ties. We live in different states now so it should not be too difficult. The sacrifice this path tolls is more noticeable; the loss of a friend and the ruining of my reputation in concern to those she knows. This path may have a initial price but it is relatively thorn free; once I pay I am free from the embarrassment and harm of her knowing. On the other paths I could trip on a tree branch any time because like I said before people are unpredictable.
So are there other paths I am not seeing? Are my assessments flawed? Please speak irony to me, I have had enough of her pity.

I am wanting to buy a Garmin Forerunner 305 sports watch with GPS and heart rate monitor. There are some cheaper ones online in the US and UK but I am unsure if the sat navigation will work in Australia… Can anyone help with this?? Thanks so much

Why is my resting pulse so fast?

Okay, so recently, I’ve noticed that my resting heart rate is faster than normal (sometimes above 100 per minute if I notice this and start worrying about it) because:
1). When I’m walking around to my different classes at school, my pulse is higher. I carry a heavy backpack and I have to walk up and down stairs to get to my classes. I often have to rush to avoid being late because my school is large. When I arrive to class, I’m out of breath.
2). Since I’ve been noticing this, I get nervous about it, which only causes my pulse to go even faster.
3). I’m rather lazy at home. I haven’t been exercising as much in the past year or so, because I’m not in any P. E. classes in high school (not too many options). I often don’t have enough motivation to exercise at home because I’m alone, and it’s no fun.
4). I may not be drinking much water or drinks ’cause at school, my teachers get irritated about students asking to go to the restroom (obviously the more you drink, the more you have to go).
5). I might have an unhealthy diet; since my family doesn’t have a lot of money, wo often end up eating fast foods for dinner.
6). I’m often up late at night either reading or watching TV.
7). My mom told me that I have a fast metabolism (I’m not overweight though I have a big appetite).
Could this be A) anxiety, B) I need to exercise more, C) dehydration, D) malnutrition, or E) all of the above? I know I probably have a VERY unhealthy lifestyle currently. What should I do to get back in shape?

Is there a certification program that will train you in the use to the laryngascope, suture kits, otoscope, heart rate monitor, stethoscope etc.?

Besides med school btw :)

how do I get accurate heart rate zones for exercise?

I am wanting to get accurate zones to work out in. I keep finding conflicting advice. Some get you to work out resting heart rate and calculate form there others get you to subtract your age from a number.
I get the zones (eg 60 – 80% for weight management 70 to 90% for cardio fitness etc.) I need to set my heart rate monitor to accurate readings before I know where I am at,
Anyone???

Whats the point of having a heart-rate monitor?

I was looking at a few gps watches and some of them could track your heart rate for another 20-30 bucks. Whats the point of tracking your heart-rate during a run?

I had watched a documentary in the past that dealt with sleep. It turns out that it is bad for you to exercise in the morning. In the morning your blood is very viscous a gloopy compared to your "afternoon blood." The reason this is bad is that the gloopy blood can have a stronger influence on blood platelet removal, meaning it can move blood clots that would otherwise remain where they are.

Now, I have an intense accelerated heart rate do to the medication. In the shower (I shower in the mornings), just by standing there, my heart rate can be so fast that it doesn’t have the generic: "Lub Dub *pause* Lub Dub *pause*. It doesn’t even have a pause. I’m only 16 so blood clots are not a big issue, but can this have a bad effect on my heart? An overworking heart during sedentary and less active tasks.

High Intensity vs. Low Intensity?

I got a really nice heart rate monitor recently and have been using it during different types of workouts to see how they vary. I know what high and low intensity training generally means, but I don’t really know all the schematics of them. I just always thought that the harder you work yourself during a workout, the more calories you burn…but that’s not necessarily what my heart rate monitor tells me.

I do cardio workouts every morning, but I alternate between HIIT and LIIT. One day I will get on the elliptical and go 3 or 4 minutes intervals that keep my heartrate between 120 and 150; I do this for 45 minutes. Then the next day I have a spin/cycle class I go to that incorporates the HIIT that keeps my heartrate above 160 or so; this is also a 45 minute workout. So after doing this for the past week or so I have noticed that on the days I have my low intensity workouts, I only burn within 100 calories less then I do on the days I have the high intensity workouts.

Can someone tell him how that works? I mean on the days I’m on the elliptical I almost feel like it’s too easy and I’m wasting my time….but then when I’m at my spin class I’m sweating up a storm! How are the caloric results so close?

I’ve searched the internet a bit and found that a lot of people believe what I had originally thought; that higher intensity equals higher calories burned. But this is proven to not be the case and that both high and low intensity training burns about the same. But can someone tell me how this works??
***I understand that heart rate monitors can’t be 100% accurate, but if the figures are consistently that close together; that should be a close indication of what it really is. It wouldn’t make sense that the actual numbers would be opposite extremes….the LIIT calories burned are actually a lot lower and the HIIT calories burned are actually a lot higher? Where is the logic in that? And I would like to hope that my 0 heart rate monitor is AT LEAST going to give me a good estimate….

"What I think my flaw is" nicely phrased it implies that I have objective flaw. Well my relative flaws are bulimia and cutting.

Heart rate monitor without chest strap?

I’m looking to purchase a heart rate monitor as I don’t trust the machines at my gym. All the ones that I have found come with a chest strap that sends the heart rate reading to a wrist watch.

Does anyone have or know of a monitor that is just the wrist watch? I don’t want to wear a chest strap.

Thanks!

Calorie Counting?

I walk, workout everyday, and bike everyother day. I have a pedometer, and I have a counter on my bike too. Is there something I can get that will count the calories I burn all day, instead of just when I am walking or biking. I want something that will count them when I am working out of just watching tv. People have told me to get a heart rate monitor, but if you wear it 24/7, the batteries die very fast. I wanted to get a Polar F6, but you have to send them in to replace the batteries. Is there any device out there that would work. Thanks.

I’ve been trying to work out 4-5 days a week for about an hour a day. My 5 year old son is always running around seeming to purposely get in my way. I try to make him understand that when I tell him to get out of the way it’s not to be mean, but so I won’t bump into him, kick him, or hurt him in any way while doing my exercise moves. I’ve tried keeping him busy with something else, but it never works. I’ve tried the kid workouts they have on Exercisetv on demand, but he gets bored with those. I’ve tried letting him exercise with me using my workouts but he always wants to get right under foot. I tried teaching him that each of us needs our own exercise space, but no matter where I move to get out of HIS way he jumps right in front of me to get in mine. The majority of the time I can’t even get my heart rate to a good pace during cardio because I’m constantly having to stop. I watch my diet and already run around with him outside, pick him up swinging him around while playing, and all of the "every day activities" that the pros suggest to exercise with kids, but I think I have a naturally slow metabolism(even though I’m only 25) because I never see results from these activities, which is why I think I need this extra workout. My husband works 5pm until 7am and sleeps until 1pm, then I have to work 4pm-9pm, my son and I get home about 10pm. The time between my husband getting up and me going to work I have to fix lunch and take that time to clean up the house while he spends time with our son. The only child-free time I’d have to work out is around 11pm when my son is in bed, but by then I am so exhausted from the busy day that I can’t get motivated to do any kind of work out and I have to go to sleep by 12 to get enough rest to be up and start the day over at 7am the next morning. With all that said, does anyone have an helpful suggestions?
