My boyfriend is massively into running, not paticularly long distance (although he does this once a week) but more sprinting and interval training. He loves keeping fit in general and i keep hearing him talk to his friends about heart rate monitor watches! now im completely clueless but would love to buy him a really nice one for his birthday, but i have no idea where to start? What make is best? what should i look out for? I know he wouldn’t like anything too big and bulky as he has really small wrists, please help
I know there are now heart rate monitors that have the option of counting calories burned, but I have an older version of one of the heart rate monitors. I was hoping to keep and use this one instead of buying a new one and just manually determine my calories burned during exercise.

I frequently use a heart rate monitor when working out, and it’s always bothered me that when I’m done working out (like with in the first few minutes) my heart rate will drop pretty fast. Like from 140/150 to like 100/90 in a matter of min. Is this a good thing or a bad thing??

I have started using the gym cardio equipment to train with a heart monitor. I was wondering what is the most effective heart rate to burn fat and increase fitness. Secondly what is the best cardio equipment for rugby fitness, treadmill, Bike, sitdown bike, rower, crosstrainer? I live in a place where there isn’t room to train properly outside so the gym is my only option. Thanks for your advice.

I’m 5’1, 118 lbs., with a BMR of 1328. Per a BMR website, I calculated that I should be eating 2058 calories to be in maintanence mode. My activity level would proably fall within a moderatly active zone, so per the website: (1328*1.55=2058.4) this is how I came up with 2058. If I want to lose 5-10 lbs. I was figuring I would shave about 300 calories or so off of 2058 and plan to eat 1700 calories in order to reach my goals.
My question is this: with all of this information in mind, I purchased an F4 Polar calorie-counting heart rate monitor a few days ago and started wearing it from 8 AM-8 PM. The purpose was to find out exactly how active I really am. Last night when I took my HR monitor off for example, my results were 2200 calories burned (this includes 8 am-8 pm of daily activity with excercise).
What I need to understand is, does the 2200 calories burned from 8 AM-8 PM(including excercise), exist separate from my BMR? In other words, the website that told me my BMR was 1328. Do I add 2200+1328 to see my total caloric burn, or is the 2200 calories basically my BMR?
I am looking for a cheap, simple Heart Rate Monitor Device that logs my Heart Rate into a computer. I am not really looking for those HRM watches, just need a sensor that simply only connects to PC.

I have been jogging for about 5 years, usually 3 miles, 3 times a week. I was reading that my target heart rate is suppose to be between 140-155bpm. I finally got around to buying a heart rate monitor and wore it on the treadmill the other day. Yikes, it was about 170bpm! I jog at 6mph and when I went down to 5.5mph, it was still about 165bpm. I couldn’t bring myself to go any slower because it felt so slow! Is it okay to keep my heart rate that high during 30 minutes of exercise, or is it harmful? My resting heart rate is in the high 60′s and my cholesterol is low so I know the exercise must be doing more good than bad, even if it is too high.
I can’t get a constant signal with the HR monitor on my Garmin 305. It works for a bit when the contacts are wet, but then dies. I’ve tried the belt on my chest, on my back, with anti-static spray etc. But nothing helps. Strap position is important, but exactly where is it supposed to be? I’ve never gotten other HR monitors to work, there are a bunch in a drawer in my desk. Is the Garmin destined to join them? : – (
Hi there, i recently started using a treadmill with pulse sensory pads on the handrails. When running my heart-rate gets to around 90-100bpm which i presumed was normal. However, on the treadmill it has a little chart which is titled ‘heart rate training zones’ and for my age it says my heart rate should be between 125 and 165bpm. Obviously i know that if i run faster i will be able to achieve this but i just wanted to know what it means. I run pretty fast to get to around 100bpm so what do these ‘training zones’ actually represent? Thanks for helping if you can understand the question!
Ever wondered why people exercise with heart rate? This animated video answer that precise question and explains how training with heart rate provides guidance to train at the right level and get the best workout for your body – and your goals. Full transcript: Let me tell you about heart rate training. I will start at the beginning. In 1977, we invented heart rate monitoring to help people be fitter / faster. Before then, people thought the best way to get fitter was to train as hard as they possibly could, but in fact the very best way to reach your goal — whatever it is — is to train smart. You do this by listening to your heart, so you know when to go fast and when to you slow, and that’s why people choose Polar. We not only listen to their hearts with great accuracy, but we tell them what the information means for their body. Think of your Polar training computer like a coach on your wrist monitoring your performance, storing vital feedback and interpreting the information to guide you onwards. Many people think heart rate training is just for performance athletes, but actually Polar makes heart rate training simple for everyone who exercises for a reason. You just need to choose the right type of training computer to guide you and you will get to your goal more quickly, because it will tell you the right intensity at which to train, so you never waste any time. You see, your heart is amazing. When you make it work at different intensities, different things happen …
what’s the best thing to buy at online retailers like Amazon, or dept. stores such as Target, Barnes and Noble, Walmart? I am into fittness, survival, seasmanship, dolphin/whale-activist books (big fan of O’Barry and Watson and other unnamed activists), regular fiction/scifi-fantasy books, soundtrack music, and casio watches/gadgets. I feel like going out tomorrow and getting dumbells/hand weights, a new book, cd, or heart rate monitor for my training; Also I’ve been looking for a velcro strap for my casio current watch.
I can’t decide on what to get since I really only have enough for one or two purchases, but don’t necessarily need any particular one right now! I will generally be geting these over time, but what do you guys think you would get right now from my list or feel free to add items if it’s around the same category? Tell me why too, but doesn’t have to relate to me, just explain what you feel currently about this stuff and which ones would you get for you right now? Thanks

I’m looking for a heart rate monitor watch that gives my pace for my mile time on the watch. It would need to come with a heart rate monitor chest strap and foot pod I think then. I don’t really mind not having a heart rate monitor. I just want a watch that at least shows me my mile pace (0:00/mi). I’m looking for one of the above for around 0, as much as 0 possibly. Thanks for the help
I decided to wear my polar heart rate monitor for 24 hours to see how many calories I burn a day; after the 24 hours, it said that I burned 1200 calories..is my metabolism slow? I decided to to a couple more times, just to see if it was consistent, and it averaged out to be the same.
I’m 18 years old, 5’5, and 115 pounds; does this mean that I need to eat 1200 a day to maintain my weight?
I am doing my first triathlon in about 11 weeks. I began my training program, but the running part is a little tough. I have a heart rate monitor and have been trying to train in my aerobic zone. Im 28/ F and it says my aerobic zone is about 140-160. So, I have been warming up, then jogging until i hit 161 then walking briskly until I hit 139. Then I run again and so on…..
Is this right?
Right now, I can not run very long (about 60-90 seconds) before I go over the aerobic zone. Will this improve? My goal is to be able to jog the entire (or at least a majority) of the running part of the tri. I know I have a long way to go, but am I doing it right? Tips would also be appreciated!!
BTW – I am brand new to running. I am an experienced swimmer and biker though.
